Forbidden Forest: The Story of Little John and Robin Hood
Published in Hardcover by Orchard Books (May, 2002)
Author: Michael Cadnum
Average review score:

A Rousing Tale of Adventure and Suspense
The story of Little John's induction into Robin Hood's infamous band of thieves. On the run from the law, Little John finds himself torn between the need to survive, and doing so at the cost of his morals. A wonderfully written tale that blends rich historical details with compelling, believable characters, both evil and heroic. Excellent portrayal of the nature of how alliances are formed out of need, and how trust can forge bonds of unity.

A recommended read for anyone interested in poetic language and an adventurous romp through the medieval life of those profiting from the misery of others, and those striving to enforce a rogue's sense of justice. A rousing good tale of adventure, suspense, camaraderie, and the thrill of pursuing justice with honor. An enjoyable and inventive interpretation of a intriguing side-kick to the legend of Robin Hood.

Caution: Graphic portrayal of the brutality and violence of medieval life may not be suitable for sensitive readers.

The Forest (Phoenix Poets)
Published in Hardcover by University of Chicago Press (August, 1995)
Author: Susan Stewart
Average review score:

.....
I heard an interview on Ex Libris with Susan Stewart and soon after ordered The Forest. I like the way she uses language. There's a back and forth motion in her lines with words and ideas. Slaughter is at the beginning and about the slaughtering of a cow and how the slaughtering changes the cow to the point that it is no longer recognized as a cow, but as products to be used by people. The Forest is also about the same type of thing. We have what appears to be forests, but the forests that we know now have been controlled by people for so long that we don't know what real forests are. We only know facsimiles of forests. In places, she gets very academic and the voice that draws me in to listen is covered over. Overall, her mysterious and quiet voice speaks these poems that I will read again, entranced.

Good kids adventure book
I read this book in I think 4th grade or so. That would have been the early 60's. Since I still remember the book at age
48, it must have been good. An exciting mystery for a
9-13 year old.

Forest Mensuration
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (December, 2003)
Authors: Bertram Husch, Thomas W. Beers, and John A. Kershaw
Average review score:

A Classic Still Available
First, let's correct an error. The 3rd edition was published in 1982 by John Wiley & Sons so the date of "February 1993" is not when the edition came out (maybe its when Krieger Publ. took over).

This is a classic text dealing with all aspects of forest measurements - from individual trees to rather sophisticated forest inventory techniques. It is the ONLY text that contains associated mathematics beyond the basics. It is the ONLY text that deals with metric scale of measurements, especially with point sampling.

A Fantastic Fighting Fantasy
This is a great book, which kept my interest right up to the very end. The Forest of Doom is a wonderful book for anybody interested in fantasy stories. The fact that the book is also a roll playing game made it that much more interesting for me. There are just so many ways the story can go which means I can read it again and again.

A Forest of Voices: Conversations in Ecology
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages (07 January, 2000)
Authors: Chris Anderson and Lex Runciman
Average review score:

A Superb Collection
I want to applaud the editors of this volume for including a diverse set of viewpoints. A few other works of this type merely include the "typical" pieces of authors such as Thoreau. While these authors are included in A Forest of Voices, other not so well-known authors are found as well. Some of these authors argue the politically correct approach to environmentalism common in our society today. Others do not, thus providing an important balance of views. While I cannot say I agree with the authors in many of the pieces, I applaud the collection of works. As its apt subtitle suggests, A Forest of Voices does provoke stimulating Conversations in Ecology.
